Sipera - Top 10 VoIP Leaders
Website: www.sipera.com
What makes it a fierce leader: Sipera is a pure play security
firm focused on VoIP and other IP communications. With security remaining the
Achilles heal for VoIP Sipera has emerged as one of the leaders in the VoIP
security space. Founded in 2003, Sipera is headquartered in Richardson, Texas,
with a development center in India, Sipera has developed solutions which learn
call patterns and endpoint fingerprints enabling the solution to adapt to new
types of threats. The real time nature of VoIP requires an ability for solutions
to evolve so as to stop stealth attacks and VoIP spam. Sipera's Viper Lab
has concentrated its efforts on identifying SIP, UMA and IMS vulnerabilities and
has exposed a number of critical vulnerabilities in several big
players.
What to look for: Sipera's work means the firm is not the
most popular in the VoIP family. Earlier this year Sipera claimed Vonage, Globe7
and Grandstream users were vulnerable to identity theft, eavesdropping and other
exploits from hackers. The Texas-based security lab said among other threats,
unwitting VoIP users face eavesdropping, spam, spoofing and denial-of-service
attacks. Since then several reports have been published noting the vulnerability
of VoIP, including the almighty Cisco having to admit its phones were vulnerable
to eaves dropping and other hacks. Publicity around security is affecting VoIP's
credibility with no provider wanting to be party to an embarrassing attack,
which is why firms like Sipera are going to be kept very busy.
