Traveling along...

Fierce is doing a lot of traveling this month.

This week, our sister publication FierceWireless is on-site at CTIA IT with Sue Marek, Mike "I have a camera and I know how to use it" Dolan and Phil Goldstein delivering the breaking news from San Francisco.  You can check out the special coverage at http://www.fiercewireless.com/ctialive.

Next week, Associate Editor Pete Wylie will be at Interop on Wednesday, September 17, meeting with a mix of IP communications equipment manufacturers and service providers. The following week, I will be in the San Francisco/San Jose area on Monday (9/22) and Tuesday (9/23), visiting with a couple of IP communications companies and attending Streaming Media West.  Most of my (steadily dwindling) availability at Streaming Media West is on Tuesday afternoon at this point, with a hard-stop at 5 p.m., because I have a flight to catch to Phoenix for AstriCon.

I'll be at AstriCon on Wednesday (9/24) and Thursday (9/25), meeting with a lot of Digium people and asking a ton of questions. Open source telephony solutions seem to edging their way to becoming the dominant chunk of offerings for the SMB, but there's a lot of "other" besides pure unfiltered Asterisk, including its own SwitchVOX, FreeSwitch, Fonality, and (in the comeback story of the year) sipX on Nortel gear. Will Asterisk move "up" into larger enterprises and carriers in a bigger way?

What other surprises does Digium have up its sleeve? Bet on at least one big announcement at the conference; last year it bought SwitchVOX.
